Kevin Devine, known as one of the most prolific singer-songwriters in the indie-rock community, has always placed premium importance on the messages his songs relay. As his most recent work, the Bulldozer and Bubblegum LPs, show Devine's lyricism often ranges from intensely, intimately personal to very outwardly political.
In 2015, Devine launched an ambitious project in partnership with Bad Timing Records and his own Devinyl Records. The goal: Release six split 7" releases with a different partner on each split, effectively curating a colleciton of a whole year's worth of musical output released every other month.
Devinyl Splits No. 1, 2, and 3 were released in February, May and September, featuring Matthew Caws of Nada Surf (in which both artists covered a song by the other), Meredith Graves of Perfect Pussy (new music from each other) and Tigers Jaw (both covering The Cure).
The splits were met with great reaction from Devine's devoted fanbase: Over 200 people subscribed to a year-long subscription of the series when it was announced, even though they only knew the first three partners.
Devinyl Splits No. 4 and No. 5 are set to come out later in 2015 featuring Cymbals Eat Guitars and Owen, respectively. Devine will play three shows in December (in Brooklyn, Philly and Boston) with all the Devinyl Splits contributors to celebrate the split series.
