Friday Music would like to welcome back to our Al Stewart Original Masters Series, his wonderful "Zero She Flies" and "Orange" albums. With a folk edge and a hint of progressive rock to come, both of these fine LP’s have never earned their due with a U.S. audience, as they had never been originally released here. As Al states, “Columbia Records executives in the U.S. had no real interest in releasing anything by me, so eventually we got a pass to go to another label. Actually, we went to all the majors and got turned down by them all.”

The albums' range with influences drawing from his English club roots, which also reflect his time when he was roommates with another future superstar named Paul Simon. “In 1965, I think for about 3 months when I was in the next room, I could hear him writing songs, and when people finish songs, the first thing they want to do is to play it to someone. Obviously, I was the only person there. He wrote ‘Richard Cory’. I thought it was fantastic. I said that’s great, and whatever that thing you were working on yesterday, throw that one away and go with this. The one I told him to get rid of was ‘Homeward Bound’(laughing). It was a fun time.”

Al further states, “When I got up to London, there were three very distinct influences, both on me and on the rest of the folk scene. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Bert Jansch. I started off doing Dylan songs with the two club jobs I had on weekends. In between, I was out looking for gigs. Well, this is all well and good, all I know are Dylan songs at this point. And then Paul Simon arrives, which actually was convenient, because when ‘Sounds of Silence’ became a hit, there was a market for Paul’s songs, but he was gone. But of course I knew them all.

And then the third element was Bert Jansch. Immediately, I had to do a 180 degree turn, because I had been playing electric guitar in bands and had to learn how to play ‘Anji’. It was really difficult for me, because the picking style guitar I didn’t know anything about it, but you just couldn’t get a job on the folk scene unless you could do some guitar instrumentals. Interestingly enough, there were two instrumentals on ‘Zero She Flies’, and if you listen to ‘Gethsamene Again’ it’s almost pure Dylan. That’s me being Al Dylan, then the instrumentals and the finger style stuff that’s me being Al Jansch, then you hear good melodies that’s me trying to be Al Simon. At this stage in life, I think those were big influences.

For tracks like ‘Electric Los Angeles Sunset ‘I had just read a newspaper article about a murder in LA, and I just condensed it into a song. That’s more like a folk rock thing. Most of ZSF is from memory, but that’s me returning to more of my folk rock roots.”

His fourth LP "Orange" is about the ending of a relationship, and more importantly it exhibited a transition showing a more prog-rock side of the artist with major players like Rick Wakeman (Yes/Strawbs), The Rumour, and Tim Renwick all helping out.

“Yea, that’s basically what it was all about. Songs like ‘I’m Falling,’ that’s the whole manic depressive end of a relationship. That aside, the interesting thing is that this was the first album of mine that sounded like a record, because it actually had a proper producer. The first three albums – no one was really in charge. ‘Orange‘ actually sounded good I thought. It actually sounded like a proper record to me, but of course, it’s very hard to listen to because it’s so depressing. But having said that, after all these years, we’ve gone back to playing the ‘News from Spain’ again on stage (laughing). I never thought I’d play that song again, but people seem to like it.”

Al Stewart fans have been following him now for over four decades, and Friday Music is pleased to announce this limited edition two-fer re-release. Both his "Zero She Flies" and "Orange" albums are impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso from Al Stewart’s original tapes, we believe you’ll truly enjoy the brilliant music within.
